Advising Folders!
Advising Folders! First, we found out our advising assignments. There are three advising options at MIT. First theres traditional advising, where you are assigned an advisor and you meet with them every once in awhile to make sure things are going OK. Then theres seminar advising, where your advisor leads a small group of students in a kind of mini-class on some random, fun topic. (You get a few credits, too!) Then theres Residence Based Advising (RBA), but thats just weird and I dont know anything about it, except that its residence based. I was lucky enough to be assigned to my first choice advising seminar, MAS.A17 (Designing Technologies for Kids). Basically I get to play with toys. I anticipate some fun blog entries about that. So stay tuned. =P We excited prefrosh also received the results of the HASS-D lottery. I was lucky enough to be assigned my first choice class here too- 21F.716 (Introduction to Contemporary Hispanic Literature). Let me just say that I really have no problem with this concept where everyone refers to classes by their numbers, Ive even got some of them figured out already. But 21F.716 is way too much for me. How do you even say that out loud? Isnt it just much easier to call it Spanish Lit or something? Really now. Anyway, I made a stop at Barnes and Noble yesterday and picked up a new Spanish-English dictionary and now Im fully ready to take some Spanish at MIT. Im not sure if Ill have to meet with the professor to prove my proficiency at Spanish, so well see how that goes. Maybe my AP Spanish score will count. And speaking of AP scoresthose are also posted in the Advising Folder. I had totally forgotten that I get 9 units of general elective credit for my score on the Spanish Language AP, so that was a pleasant sort-of surprise. I also get credit for 8.01 (Physics I) because of my AP Physics C scores. So all in all, I was very happy to see my advising folder! (The folder also contains FEE results so that everything is organized in one handy folder, but since I already bored you with that topic, Ill leave it out of this entry.) The last piece of information in my folder was the results of the Math Diagnostic. (The folder also contains IB scores, GCE A-level scores, Math transfer credit, and Mission 2009/Terrascope Acceptance, but none of these apply to me, so youll have to look elsewhere for information about them.) I did alright on the test overall, but with a noted weakness in logarithms and exponentials. The text reads: Your Diagnostic score, while generally acceptable, showed at least one area of weakness in Pre-Calculus. You might consider enrolling in 8.01L, (which is a longer version of 8.01 designed for students with little or no exposure to physics with calculus in high school.) So if youve been paying attention so far, youll notice that I was advised to consider taking the longer version of a class that I tested out of! Hmmm. Math causes me so many problems. Its a shame, really. In other news, I leave for MIT on Saturday! Thats the day after tomorrow! Thats insane! I have packed exactly one box, so you can imagine that I have quite a lot of work to do over the next 36 hours. That means that the next time I update this blog, I will be doing so from MIT campus. Then Ill actually have things to write about, which will also be exciting (and easier). Im a little sad about leaving- this excessively lame town has been my home my entire life, so I do feel slightly attached to it. But dont worry, Im definitely more happy than sad about starting college. Im getting a little tired of every single person I run into at Bed, Bath and Beyond asking me if Im excited about school. No offense to all the adults out there, but that one definitely ranks at the top of the list of Lamest and Most Annoying Questions Ever. Just a heads up. Have a nice day. =)

Although the novels are organized in different stylistic forms, Steinbeck uses the themes of pursuing the American dream, developi ng compassion for others, the importance of unification, and the mass hardship and suffering in life in both The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men.In both novels, the theme of the American dream is present. The farmers quickly realized that they were powerless when they worked individually to fight the system that held them back. Although they still struggled as they worked together, the people found their tasks less agonizing when their discomfort was shared, and so they banded together and journeyed westward. Unification was very important in keeping the family stron g. Whenever one family member gave up on the group, the entire family faced conflicts between each other. Although they continued on with their journey after a member withdrew or had to be left behind, the family struggled to get back on track. If they didnââ¬â¢t have each other to inspire and motivate one another particularly Ma, who always kept the family moving together then they all would have suffered much more than they essentially did. Ma held the group together through her dominant role as head of the family. She was always the member to gather the family together after a loss when the rest lost their hope. Like in The Grapes of Wrath, the characters in Of Mice and Men, specifically George and Lennie, choose to unite to overcome societyââ¬â¢s cruelty. Lennie, who suffered from a mild form of retardation, recognized the significance of having George in his life when he said, ââ¬Å"I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and thatââ¬â¢s whyâ⠬ (Mice 15). Lennie shows that no matter what life challenges them with, he and George will always support one another because they need each other.In both works, Steinbeck portrays the theme of compassion in human nature, as the characters frequently make sacrifices for one another. Amongst the many relationships in The Grapes of Wrath, whether family bonds, friendships, or mere acquaintanceships, compassion ties the characters together. Oftentimes, the compassion is shown through sacrifice, which makes the relationships even stronger. Compassion and love for one another mean that an individual must look past the differences in others and find the things they have in common to join together. They must also put one anotherââ¬â¢s necessities in front of his or her own and consider the common benefit rather than pure self-benefit. For example, when Ma forfeits part of her familyââ¬â¢s stew for the children in the camp, she becomes greatly selfless for those who appeared desper ate for care. She explained to an upset woman, ââ¬Å"Sââ¬â¢pose you was cookinââ¬â¢ a stew anââ¬â¢ a bunch of little fellas stood arounââ¬â¢ mooninââ¬â¢, whatââ¬â¢d you do? We didnââ¬â¢t have enough, but you canââ¬â¢t keep it when they look at ya like thatâ⬠(Grapes 333). Out of compassion for the hungry children, Maââ¬â¢s motherly instinct told her to help them, even if it meant she would have to sacrifice her own limited food supply. Likewise, in Of Mice and Men, George sympathizes with Lennie by choosing to help Lennie rather than leave him vulnerable to the unkindness in society. When George shoots Lennie in the head before the lynch mob comes to torment him, he shows compassion for Lennieââ¬â¢s well-being in the future. If George had allowed the mob to take him away, Lennie would have been lost by himself in society without George, and he would have found himself in more trouble. By shooting him, George quickly ends the pain for his best frie nd. However, he sacrifices the life of a loved one, a dilemma he must handle emotionally. This sacrifice made by George shows great compassion for Lennieââ¬â¢s feelings and great bravery for having the ability to do something so traumatizing.In both novels, Steinbeck conveys the theme of suffering and living through severe hardship. In The Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family, along with several thousand other impoverished farming families, suffered the most from being manipulated and taken advantage of by the government. As the government and banks became more greedy and authoritative over the farmers, the farmers were pushed further into extreme poverty. The farmers resorted to whatever they could come by to survive through the hunger, pain, and anguish. The farmers began observing that, ââ¬Å"in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy for the v intageâ⬠(Grapes 449). Steinbeck expresses that as the people are repeatedly abused by the bankââ¬â¢s power, they will eventually grow tired of taking the maltreatment, and they will desire a change. Their tolerance grows thin as the grapes get heavier, metaphorically. The heavy grapes symbolize the burden the government workers put on the farmers through their greediness. Soon enough the grapes will be ready to be picked for the vintage; soon enough, the farmers will be ready for a revolution. In Of Mice and Men, Lennie is repetitively tormented by his disability. Due to his compulsion for petting soft objects, he likes to carry around animals such as mice and puppies, whether they are dead or alive. He constantly finds himself in trouble because he does not know his own strength, and he kills several animals unintentionally. Lennie even killed Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, who allowed him to feel her soft hair. Ultimately, this hardship led to Lennieââ¬â¢s downfall in the end, when the mob chased him for killing Curleyââ¬â¢s wife.In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeckââ¬â¢s style and format is exceptionally distinct. He uses the intercalary chapter format throughout the book, alternating between an observation of society as a whole and a detailed description of the Joad familyââ¬â¢s quest to the west. The intercalary style of this book is effective in explaining the context of the story of the Joad family. As the family treks across America, they are conflicted by the woes of the Great Depression. The broad chapters in the novel provide a background and an evaluation of the rest of the farmers and government through symbolism and metaphors. However, this style may be unappealing for some readers, as it greatly extends the length of the story and turns the reading into a seemingly daunting task to complete. Steinbeck also uses Oklahoman dialect in the dialogue of the characters to emphasize the setting and time period. Tom encountered an Oklahoman man in California, who warned him, ââ¬Å"Okie useââ¬â¢ ta mean you was from Oklahoma. Now it means youââ¬â¢re a dirty son-of-a-bitch. Okie means youââ¬â¢re a scum. Donââ¬â¢t mean nothing itself, itââ¬â¢s the way they say itâ⬠(Grapes 264-265). This man shows Tom that ââ¬Å"Okieâ⬠is just a word, but the way the Californians say it puts an offensive connotation behind the word. The man also speaks in a Southern dialect to emphasize the offense in the term ââ¬Å"Okieâ⬠because he is an ââ¬Å"Okieâ⬠as well.In Of Mice and Men, the stylistic format used is different from the other book in many ways. This novel is a story told chronologically about George and Lennie, two friends who depend on one another to survive the brutality during the Great Depression. The novel is a relatively short story in comparison to The Grapes of Wrath because it focuses on only the experiences of George and Lennie in a small time period. The dialogue in this book is effecti ve in telling the story because it creates a more personal perspective for the reader. By telling the story from the charactersââ¬â¢ points of view, the connection between the authorââ¬â¢s message and the story is more precise. The author accurately shows the charactersââ¬â¢ feelings, thoughts, and interactions between one another through their dialogue instead of often being ambiguous through narrations. When George tells Lennie, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t let him pull you in ââ¬â but if the son-of-a-bitch socks you let ââ¬â¢im have it,â⬠(Mice 33) it directly shows Georgeââ¬â¢s proud yet vengeful attitude. George looks out for Lennie and guides him through the conflict with Curley. This is directly shown through his dialogue, whereas the alternative would have been more ambiguous, indirect, and lengthy.Although they have very different stylistic formats, The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men have several similar themes. The theme of pursuing the American Dream is present in both books, although they all suffer through the destitution of living in the Great Depression. Throughout the relationships between the characters, unity is especially important, as well as compassion for one another. In the 1930s, farmers were repressed by the banks and the government. The two novels reflect upon peopleââ¬â¢s ability to unite and their strength upon doing so. The citizens, in mass numbers, have the potential to overrule corruption in the government and in banks, but the power of the people is rarely used with such intentions. If each person recognized ââ¬Å"that companion fact: when a majority of the people are hungry and cold they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds through all history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressedâ⬠(Grapes 306), then governments would no longer be so controlling in peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Steinbeck portrays that the governmentââ¬â¢s attempts to keep the people repressed only unite everyone with a common interest: being freed from repression. People also overlook their capability to resolve issues; many believe they are not influential enough, but in reality, working together is the most effective form of opposition to the government. Today, several conflicts in society could easily be fixed if every individual worked together to fix them. However, most often, people continue in their own paths, and they are not willing to work together until the situation becomes an absolute crisis.

Personal Statements on The Road Ahead
The experiences I have had in my life have taught me important virtues that have not only given me more strength and vigor to pursue my dreams but also to cherish and respect the family unit and those who live around us irrespective of their socio-economic status. On a personal and professional note Iââ¬â¢m a passionate individual with strong organizational skills and a positive attitude towards academic research, project management and community based programs and take great pleasure in volunteer programs with the aim of improving situations as they are. Involving and interacting with pertinent issues that affect the well being of communities and ones that pose great challenges to the existence of human beings have enabled me to take a more positive and pragmatic approach to life. I have in turn become a more flexible and determined personality who views challenges and problems as opportunities to make a difference (Yammarino, 2002). Firstly the occurrence that took place in the year 2008 on the 12th of May practically changed my life and more so my personal opinion about interpersonal relationships and the fact that there is more to life than just living. In this particular year in question, a huge disaster happened which shocked the whole world. That is the 5.12-Wenchuan earthquake in China where millions of houses crashed down, and millions of people lost their dear lives. While I look into the news every day, it constantly pained me to learn that more and more people were found dead while at the same time developed a sense of hope with news about people who got found and rescued. In that year I had already planned to go back to China and visit relatives and friends. Instead I abandoned the plans to meet with friends and relatives and joined a self-organized volunteer team with a couple of my friends and went ahead to the disaster area of Sichuan Province. Upon arriving at city of Chengdu, we were sent to Beichuan, one of the disaster areas. Our teamââ¬â¢s volunteer work was mainly based at the victimsââ¬â¢ settlement areas. Our tasks were to handle and distribute the aid materials, and organize all kinds of activities for the victims. During the two weeks there, the primitive living conditions, the volunteer tasks and the fear of experiencing aftershocks were not the most difficult part, the hardest most challenging thing was how to encourage the disaster victims to walk out of their desperation and sadness, and look forward to their new lives. However my interaction with the victims and the strong faith they had in life deeply touched me and taught me to cherish life, and further take life challenges head on. My responsibility as a volunteer in the aftermath of the disaster made me experience things that I had never or would never experience in my life. I met people from all over the world, who were united for one reason, and that is to help people who lost their homelands and their loved ones. No matter how bad the environment was, or how tired we were everyday; as long as the victims were properly taken care of and felt the love and warmth of a family, we considered our task a success. I eventually left Beichuan after two weeks of volunteer work which was an experience of a life time and one that I will forever remember even though I didnââ¬â¢t spend really long time there. It elevated my life to a whole new level. For the first time, I really thought about life. Iââ¬â¢ve come to the understanding that we should all cherish our lives, and live it meaningfully. Compared to what the disaster victims experienced, there are absolutely no reasons for me to give up on anything, there are also no reasons for us to not treat our family and friends with respect and love. With that in mind, I have to date worked hard to overcome the obstacles and challenges in life with a positive and optimistic mind, treasuring the times that I spend with my family and friends and become more determined and resilient in everything I do. Patients who have been diagnosed with visual agnosia have different impaired abilities. Some of the patients with this disorder are not able to recognize pictures of birds and trees despite the fact that they can recognize them through their senses other than vision. According to Farrah, 1990 some of the patients cannot recognize the faces of their family, friends or relatives. Additionally, these patients can also not draw pictures of familiar objects. The traditional view of this disorder as the inability to recognize objects have gone through a number of challenges in the past. There have been critics that contend that this disorder can be defined by an a lteration in functions that are in most times likely to be generalized by intellectual deterioration. The first person to classify this disorder into two categories was Lissauer. He classified it into a perceptive and associative mind blindness. These categories were brought out when the patients were asked to describe certain patterns, draw them, and point it out from similar objects. According to Lassaeur, a person who has apperceptive agnosia lacks the ability to copy, draw or match the object. A patient suffering from associative agnosia is the one who cannot store knowledge of the world of the objects but is able to draw copy and match even if he or she lacks the ability to identify it. Though these patients can hardly recognize real objects, their vision is better than in recognizing line drawings. The identification of objects by these individuals is by piecing together, size, color, reflectance clues, and texture. They can make guesses that are accurate about an object especially its nature such as the color of an object, how shiny a glass is and a metal. The patients use time-consuming strategies in order to recognize visual objects. Patients that suffer from associative agnosia can come up with copies of an object that they may not recognize and can match the objects. People with this type of agnosia can identify an object using its shape. The mistake that this type of people makes is naming an object similar to another object that has the same shape. This patient can also copy drawings well. The drawings most the time are not normal; the product dram is just similar to the object. The perception in this disorder is intact but there is a lack of meaning. According to Milner and Goodale, there are two pathways for cortical visual in a human brain. Each has its different process. The mechanisms that underlie the ventral stream that projects to the infer temporal cortex from the primary visual cortex are involved in the visual perception. On the other hand, the dorsal stream that projects to the posterior parental cortex from the primary visual cortex is said to be involved in controlling the visual action. The two streams, therefore, work hand in hand in processing information about the orientation and location of the object. In contrast with this, visual information is usually transformed in the ventral stream in order to deliver the characteristics of the objects and how they relate. This, in turn, permits the formation of perceptual representation of how the world is.This representation play a vital role in identifying and recognizing objects and this enables us into classify events, objects and by so doing we attach meaning to them . This also helps one in accumulating information and knowledge about the world. Most of the cells that are found in the infer temporal cortex which is the terminus of central stream do respond well to visual stimuli that are complex such as the faces and the hands (Warrington, 2016). The most anterior parts of the infer temporal cortex are very selective on how they respond to object properties. The receptive field in each cell in the IT cortex can be seen as features that are common to images of different natural objects. The IT cortex also contains some neurons, which are responsible for demonstrating properties that are consistent with the constancy of the object. This ensures that the cells respond selectively to the visual stimulus despite changes in its viewpoint, color or size. The above is evident from no human primate studies. Large resections, which are bilateral of temporal lobe, may result to agnosia. Lesion in the IT can impair the ability of the primate to identify objects in terms of pattern, shape or color. The primates had a lot of difficulties in learning the association with objects or even distinguish objects based on their visual dimensions. These primates could not distinguish between foods and nonfoods and were seen picking the same objects repeatedly. In Conclusion, Visual agnosia is a rare disorder but also very easy for one to get once they sustain a brain damage or any of the causes mentioned above. Agnosia is a neuropsychological disorder. The evils of slavery, segregation, and racial inequality have long been recognized, yet progress toward their elimination has been very slow. Endocrine System Essay The Endocrine System The body requires information in order to develop properly and maintain physiological balance. In order for the body to develop properly and maintain physiological balance it requires many different types of information. The endocrine system is one way in which these communications happen. By using hormones, organs and tissues alike contribute to the regulation of bodily processes. Hormones are chemicals that the endocrine glands excrete into intercellular spaces that then diffuse into the bloodstream. There are two types of hormones that affect how the individual hormone reacts to its specific target cell: non-steroid and steroid. Steroid hormones are lipid soluble and pass through the cell membranes, where they bind to receptors within the cells and attach to DNA molecules to activate genes (Alcamo, 2003). Because protein, or non-steroid, hormones are not lipid soluble, they must instigate chemical changes by binding to hormone receptors at the plasma membrane of their target cells. This triggers chemical reactions that activate the second messengers, molecules that continue carrying the information, for the ââ¬Å"messageâ⬠to be processed within the cell (Thibodeau Patton, 2008). In the second-messenger mechanism, it may help to remember that the non-steroid hormone acts as the first messenger, and the molecules activated by the non-steroid hormone re acting with the receptor at the cell membrane are the second messengers. The primary purpose of hormones is to affect changes in various body systems in order to create developmental changes. They are also responsible for maintaining the balance of the body as a whole. For example, the hormone epinephrine (commonly known as adrenaline), produced by the medulla of the adrenal glands, affects the sympathetic nervous system as part of a response to stress (Thibodeau Patton, 2008). While epinephrine is not currently considered a hormone that is required for living, it is one that promotes homeostasis by providing immediate bodily response to cope and survive in perceived emergency situations. The endocrine system is composed of organs and ductless glands that facilitate body development and homeostasis (Walker Wood, 2003).The primary organs of the endocrine system include the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, pineal gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus gland, adrenal glands, sex glands, and the pancreas. Many other organs also function in some capacity as part of the endocrine system (Davis, 2006). They may utilize typical hormones or prostaglandins, which are hormones used by tissues in order to act upon other cells within the tissue (Thibodeau Patton, 2008). The pituitary gland has been, and still often is, thought of as the ââ¬Å"master glandâ⬠because of its role controlling the functions of many of the other endocrine glands. The pituitary gland is actually two parts: the adenohypophysis (the anterior pituitary gland), and the neurohypophysis (the posterior pituitary gland). The adenohypophysis is composed of glandular tissue and releases growth hormone (GH), prolactin, and tropic hormones that control other endocrine glands. GH promotes the breaking down of fat while slowing down the catabolism of glucose, and supports normal growth (Thibodeau Patton, 2008). Prolactin, also known as lactogenic hormone, promotes breast development and lactation in the pregnant and nursing mother. The tropic hormones secreted by the adenohypophysis are: thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH). TSH stimulates growth of the thyroid gland and release of thyroid hormones. ACTH acts as TSH does with the thyroid, but for the adrenal cortex and glucocorticoids. FSH, in females, affects the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, ovulation, and stimulates estrogen. In males, FSH stimulates sperm production. LH, like FSH, works on the reproductive organs. In females it acts with FSH to increase estrogen secretion from follicles, help follicles and ovum mature, and cause ovulation. LH also stimulates luteinization and the production of progesterone in women, and is sometimes called the ââ¬Å"ovulating hormoneâ⬠(Thibodeau Patton, 2008). For men, LH acts to instigate the development and secretion of testosterone. The posterior portion of the pituitary gland, the neurohypophysis, is made up of nervous tissue. This gland secretes anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin when signaled to do so by the nervous system (Walker Wood, 2003). ADH helps regulate the electrolyte balance of the body by reducing the amount of fluid urinated -as it increases how much water is reabsorbed into the body from the kidneys. Oxytocin promotes a positive feedback loop, temporarily encouraging the disruption of homeostasis, by stimulating uterine contractions during childbirth. Oxytocin also affects the cells of milk-filled breasts to encourage lactation by causing the breast milk to flow. The hypothalamus is the main reason the pituitary gland no longer has the same reputation for being the dominant endocrine gland. This is because the hypothalamus, in effect, regulates much of the pituitary gland. On top of producing the hormones the neurohypophysis secretes, the hypothalamus itself secretes hormones that act on the adenohypophysis of the pituitary gland: inhibiting and releasing hormones. The thyroid gland produces and stores the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), as well as secretes calcitonin. T4 and T3 increase the rate cells metabolize energy. Calcitonin promotes calcium balance in the blood by inhibiting the breakdown of bone. The parathyroid glands are located on the posterior side of the thyroid gland and are responsible for parathyroid hormone (PTH), also known as parathormone (Alcamo, 2003). PTH acts in the opposite regard as calcitonin and increases blood calcium levels by stimulating bone resorption. The thymus gland releases hormones for the development and differentiation of T cells, and is most productive in children as it is responsible for the development of the immune system. The hormones currently known to work for the thymus gland are: thymosin, thymopoietin, thymulin, thymic humoral factor, interleukins, and interferon (Eroschenko, 2008). The pineal gland regulates the internal clock through melatonin. Melatonin inhibits the adenohypophysis in releasing gonadotropins (Alcamo, 2003). Its secretion is controlled by the amount of light the eyes register. The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. They consist of the adrenal medulla, the core of the adrenal gland, and the outer portion of the adrenal gland known as the adrenal cortex. The adrenal medulla is the part that secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine in order to support the body in stressful situations. The adrenal cortex is made up of three layers: the outer layer (zona glomerulosa), the middle, or second, layer (zona fasciculate), and the zona reticularis -the third, innermost layer (Alcamo, 2003). The hormones these layers release are corticoids. More specifically, the corticoids each layer secretes are the mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, and sex hormones, respectively. Mineralcorticoids help maintain electrolyte balance. Glucocorticoids aid in the process of gluconeogenesis, which is a process whereby liver cells convert amino and fatty acids into glucose to increase blood glucose levels. The sex hormones secreted by the zona reticularis are androgens. The testes are the sex glands in the male and the ovaries in the female. The testes secrete the hormone testosterone from their interstitial spaces, or the spaces between the cells. Testosterone is a steroid hormone that regulates the secondary sex characteristics of males (Alcamo, 2003). Ovaries consist of two structures that have endocrine functions. The corpus luteum secretes primarily progesterone, but also secretes some estrogen, while the ovarian follicles secrete estrogen. Estrogen has many roles the females system, and contributes to maturation of the female reproductive organs, maintaining pregnancy, preparing the breasts for lactation, and developing the secondary sex characteristics (Walker Wood, 2003). Progesterone essentially serves to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. The pancreas acts as both an endocrine and exocrine gland. Its endocrine functions are extremely important to regulating blood glucose and ensuring cells receive sufficient energy. The pancreas has islet cell clusters, known as islets of Langerhans, which contain alpha, beta, and delta cells (Alcamo, 2003). The alpha cells secrete glucagon, which acts to increase blood glucose levels. The beta cells secrete the hormone insulin. Insulin behaves antagonistically to glucagon, so it acts to reduce glucose levels in the blood. The role of somatostatin, the hormone released by the delta cells, is still unclear, although its considered to affect the secretion of both insulin and glucagon (Alcamo). Other organs and tissues not immediately associated as endocrine organs also use hormones to regulate their functions. Among these organs are the heart and the kidneys. The heart produces atrial natriuretic hormone (ANH) to help regulate sodium in the blood, while kidneys have endocrine cells that release the hormone erythropoietin, helping bone marrow produce red blood cells (Davis, 2006). Research continues to teach new things about the endocrine system. Recently, in 2007, researchers at Columbia University Medical Center determined that the skeleton also performs endocrine functions by regulating blood sugar (Ballantyne). Until research reveals new information, it can be hard to define how much is still unknown about the endocrine system. Additionally, there are unanswered question concerning what is currently known such as ââ¬Å"what is the purpose of androgens in males?â⬠and ââ¬Å"what does somatostatin really do? The structure of the endocrine system is unique in that most of its organs arent actually physically attached to each other. Another interesting attribute of this system is that many other body systems also contribute to endocrine functions. This allows for the organs to communicate more quickly in localized systems, such as in the case of endocrine functions in the digestive system. The endocrine system serves to communicate with a broader group of cells, more gradually and more long-term, than the other primary communication system of the body: the nervous system (Walker Wood, 2003). The chemical transmission of information this system provides aids the body in balancing its activities throughout the other body systems, thereby promoting homeostasis. References Alcamo, I.E. Grade 8 Graduation Speech
Grade 8 Graduation Speech Hello, graduating class of 2012! Good evening and welcome to all the parents and families who have came to this graduation ceremony today. Our parents are the people who know us the best in the whole world, even if that seems hard to believe, it's true. They've helped us become the people we are today, and they've done a great job. After all, we wouldnââ¬â¢t be here without them. So, thank you, parents. Today, June, 26th, 2012, is the day that we, as a class, are going to graduate the eighth grade. Of course, we all know that. But do we really understand what it all means?The definition of graduation is to complete a class or course of study. Thatââ¬â¢s it, the original definition of graduating. To me, graduation means more than that. It means growing, it means changing, and it means moving on. Today, the ceremony might seem like it's all happening too fast, or, it might seem like it's never going to end, but all our lives we'll remember it, and that's what counts. My two years of middle school have been a time to remember, Iââ¬â¢ve learned a lot during my time in middle school, and these memories are what we are going to remember for the rest of our lives. For me, it all started on the first week of September.All I saw was these big guys playing basketball and soccer and I was wondering whether or not I will be able to fit in. Everyone else was eagerly waiting for the first school bell to ring after like 3 months of summer while I was just standing there looking everywhere as if I was lost. Eventually, all of these started to change as I started to know people better. Thing was, they werenââ¬â¢t as furious or mean as I thought they might be. In the beginning of the school year, I used to nervously switch classes without actually knowing where to go, but now I am familiar with this school like all the others.I managed to develop many new skills and stuff during grade 7. Before I knew it, it was June, grade 7 ended, and to m y surprise, I'd survived my first year of school in Regent Heights. When we came back from a 3 month long summer, I knew what more teachers would expect from me. 8th grade began. We were the oldest, and the wisest. It was a completely different experience for me, with all the testing for specialised program registrations. It required you to know quite few stuff ahead of what you were being taught.After all of that, term 2 came to an end, and we all started setting goals to do well on the next term. Many activities were held during spring. And as usual, it came to an end. We grew as teams and as a grade, but more importantly as peopleââ¬âfiguratively and literally. We became smarter, more confident, and of course, taller. Together, we listened as the guidance counsellors told us about the high school and together we looked over the seemingly endless lists of classes. We turned in our worn, wrinkled, class sheets nervously, but a couple months later, all our worries were gone.Toda y, we will graduate together, in a matter of minutes, leaving behind a school, a grade, our team, and some great, great teachers. Together we will enter the high school next fall, and in four years weââ¬â¢ll graduate again. Senior year will be just like this one, but the intensity will be higher. Iââ¬â¢m excited to enter high-school, Iââ¬â¢m pretty sure it will be fun. And, I'm sure that we can handle all of it: the teachers, the seniors, and of course, the homework. So, it's time for our graduation. Here, now, today, we're ready, even though we might not know it. Let's go, and let's make today a day that we'll remember forever.
